God and dragonflies and lizards

October 7, 2010

Two weeks ago our back yard was hit with an infestation of some crazy little gnats, the level of which made us look around for Egyptians and pyramids. In the midst of it we noticed hundreds and hundreds of beautiful dragonflies dancing through the air in our backyard. They spent a few days here, hungrily eating their way through the clouds of flies. Then they left – all of them. Not a dragonfly is in sight now.

This week another type of gnat showed up, hovering around our eyes, sticking to our sweaty faces as we worked in the yard, and lo and behold, deliverance has come by way of  green lizards. Lizard upon lizard, climbing up the walls of our house, the trees in the yard, eating their way through the bugs.

It’s given us a new appreciation for the stories in the book of Exodus and makes us wonder what’s coming next week. Will it slither or take flight, or perhaps even waddle across the lawn? Will we have an infestation of grubs and earthworms, to see armies of armadillos marching toward the house? That might actually be quite fun to behold.

If God gave me a choice, though, I’d vote for a return of the dragonflies. Much less scary and even pretty if you have eyes to see it.

My husband would have swooned for all of those dragon flies. He loves to chase them and photograph them.

We have had gnats inside for the past month, so baffling! It was so annoying that I started “hiding” the fresh fruit in the fridge and in paper bags… unfortunately, I think in my efforts I may have misplaced a bag of bananas! That won’t help the situation at all!!!

I agree … dragonflies are lovely (and shhhhh, don’t that make great bait too, said quietly so as not to offend them)
